Within a decade, LED lighting will become a viable option for general lighting solutions, according to Philips Lighting.
LED technology represents the most significant development in lighting since the invention of the electric light more than a century ago, by allowing the creation of low energy and maintenance lighting solutions.
Due to its flexibility and the ability to set any desired colour, LED lighting offers solutions such as wall washing and sharp light/ shadow lines that are not viable with existing lighting technologies.
LEDs are currently being used in a number of niche applications including decorative light sources in bars and restaurants, external signage and lighting of buildings and structures, as well as being the lamp of choice in retail commercial freezers.
Two of the latest LED products from Philips include the SpotLED 3K3, which is up to 65 per cent more energy efficient than MV 35W halogen GU10) lamps and 45 per cent better than LV 20W halogens. Both have a lamp life 16 times longer than halogens. The other new product is DecoLED, which has been designed to replace 15-20W incandescent party lamps. Besides being 80 per cent more energy efficient, it has a useful life of 20,000 hours.
