What Products Does WEEE Cover?

The simplest way of deciding if a product is covered by WEEE is to look for the wheelie bin logo on the product or it's packaging if too small to accommodate the symbol. The ‘underline’ beneath the symbol shows the product entered the market after 13 August 2005 and is therefore covered by WEEE.

In basic terms WEEE covers the following products:

  • Large household appliances
  • Small household appliances
  • IT and telecommunications equipment
  • Consumer equipment
  • Lighting equipment
  • Electrical and electronic tools
  • Toys, leisure and sport equipment
  • Medical devices
  • Monitoring and control equipment
  • Automatic dispensers

Besides these ten product categories, the regulations provide an indicative list of actual products and sets out a number of exceptions. If you need to know actually what is covered by the regulations, the appendix of the regulations or BERR WEEE guidance notes should help. These can be found on the NetRegs website.
